Writing is nothing if the reader cannot picture a scene or discussion in their heads. If one cannot visualize a bright blue sky with fluffy clouds or a dark stormy night, then how can one be fully immersed in the world you created? This is why writing descriptively is so important as a writer! However, writing this way can be very difficult as word choice is important to bring about its effectiveness.
It is good to find a nice peaceful place to write, or to find an area similar to the world you are writing. If you are writing a sci-fi book, get yourself a lava lamp or anything else to create that ambience similar to your book! Music is a great tool also if you need a way to find inspiration.
Inspiration is vital because it allows you to feel what your characters feel. If you immerse yourself into your own world, then your readers will have an easier time immersing themselves into it too. However - while inspiration is important - wording things the correct way is just as essential.
Notice the previous sentence for instance. I used multiple synonyms for "vital" in order to keep the reader's attention. If you use the same word over and over, then the reader's attention will falter. Using fancy words are great, but overusing them is bad. If you're struggling to find or running out of synonyms, then using metaphors is a great way to fix that!
Similes often break the reader's attention due to the words "like" or "as." But, using metaphors forces the reader to imagine things. "Broken hearts" or "their eyes lit up" are just some of many examples of wonderful metaphors. However, it is important that you try to come up with your own in order to avoid clichés, as those also break the reader's attention.
