They Who Watch

They watched a lot, just - floating there… In the void, there wasn’t anything but a blank sheet of white and the shadows cast by them. It created beads of sweat and pounding hearts for whoever dared to travel deep into the unexplored empty space.
We discovered this dimension not long ago - not long at all. It was Dr. Kuznetsov who accidentally stumbled upon them. I remember it well, though I don’t know what may have happened to the stammering old man. Russia was freezing over that day, more than usual. The door slammed, creating a metal dent in the warehouse wall. His voice echoed throughout the barren warehouse as he shouted “Anastasia! Pack your things quick!”
“Dr. Kuznetsov! What is it? What happened?” I jolted up from my seat and turned.
“No time Ana, they’re watching us!”
“They? Doctor, they’re always watching.” I tilted my head slightly.
“No, not the party!” He looked around sporadically, “Them… They see everything…”
I backed up slightly, looking over the doctor. His eyes were bloodshot, and the way he shook sent shivers up my spine and made my hands clammy. Facing back, I wasted no time packing the few things given to us by the party in the dingy warehouse.
Not long after that - on our way out to the rusted van - the KGB quickly intercepted us. We were sent for interrogation, but it was mostly the doctor who was questioned. I didn’t see him again, but soon I began to have some idea of what happened to him when I met them…
